Ein Modul ist ein technisches Subsystem, das sich durch andere technische Subsysteme ersetzen lässt, so dass die Menge aller Funktionen oder Attribute des technischen Systems variiert wird. Sonderfälle dieser Substitution von Subsystemen sind Hinzufügen und Weglassen von Modulen. Ein Modul kann sowohl in einem einzelnen oder mehreren Produkten zum Einsatz kommen. Die sich ändernden Funktionen des Systems können hierbei sowohl die Hauptfunktion als auch Nebenfunktionen sein. Neben den Funktionen können sich auch Attribute wie z. B. das Gewicht ändern. Aufgrund der Austauschbarkeit von Modulen, ist es zielführend, einheitliche Schnittstellen an den Systemgrenzen der Module zu definieren. So kann beispielsweise in Fahrzeugen meist das Standardlenkrad gegen ein Multifunktionslenkrad ausgetauscht werden. Um die Anzahl der Schnittstellen gering zu halten, ist es zielführend, die Module so zu definieren, dass sie baulich und funktional möglichst unabhängig sind.

A module is a technical subsystem that can be replaced by other technical subsystems so that the set of all functions or attributes of the technical system is varied. Special cases of this substitution of subsystems are addition and omission of modules. A module can be used in a single product or in multiple products. In this case, the changing functions of the system can be the main function as well as secondary functions. In addition to functions, attributes such as weight can also change. Because of the interchangeability of modules, it is useful to define uniform interfaces at the system boundaries of the modules. In vehicles, for example, the standard steering wheel can usually be exchanged for a multifunction steering wheel. To keep the number of interfaces low, it is useful to define the modules in such a way that they are as structurally and functionally independent as possible.
