Fields of competence
The Medical and Health Technology research group supports the development of medical devices in interaction with users and patients as well as the healthcare system, with the aim of improving healthcare and promoting people's well-being.
We focus primarily on systems-based research, utilizing the synergy between systems, methods and process models. We understand complex mechatronic medical devices as cyber-physical systems (CPS) of the system of systems approach (SoS). Our focus in product development is on researching the validation process and innovation-relevant factors in the strictly regulated healthcare industry. By working closely with industry partners, we create practical solutions for product development that meet the requirements and standards of the medical technology sector.

Our medical technology research group also acts as a thematic bridge to the diverse fields of research at IPEK and the center KITHealthTech.
Main research areas:
- Analysis and identification of innovation needs in medical and healthcare technology
- Development of physical, virtual or mixed physical-virtual validation environments for holistic validation of overall and subsystemic health technologies
- Use of descriptive system models in the sense of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to support medical technology product development
- Development of education and training concepts for medical staff and applications supported by XR technology

For validation, IPEK has access to modern testing technology, high-quality measurement technology and a wealth of experience in IPEK-XiL-based modeling.
