Die SPALTEN-Methodik beschreibt eine universelle Vorgehensweise zur Behandlung von Problemen mit unterschiedlichen Randbedingungen und Komplexitätsgraden. Mit ihrer Hilfe kann eine Aufwand- und Zeitminimierung sowie eine Lösungsoptimierung in Verbindung mit einer Sicherheitsmaximierung bei der Problemlösung erreicht werden. Basis dieser Methodik ist das "Systems Engineering". Des Weiteren ist der „Allgemeine Problemlösungsprozess“, bestehend aus der Problemanalyse, der Problemformulierung, der Systemsynthese, der Systemanalyse, der Beurteilung und der Entscheidung, wie er nach der VDI-Richtlinie 2221 aufgefasst wird, in der SPALTEN-Methodik integriert und wird durch die Arbeitsschritte (Module) Umsetzung und Nachbereiten/Lernen erweitert.

The SPALTEN methodology describes a universal approach for handling problems with different boundary conditions and degrees of complexity. With its help, a minimization of effort and time as well as an optimization of the solution can be achieved in connection with a maximization of safety when solving the problem. The basis of this methodology is "Systems Engineering". Furthermore, the "General Problem Solving Process", consisting of problem analysis, problem formulation, system synthesis, system analysis, evaluation and decision, as it is understood according to the VDI guideline 2221, is integrated in the SPALTEN methodology and is extended by the work steps (modules) implementation and rework/learning.
