Standortverteilte Produktentwicklung beschreibt die Ausgestaltung der Produktentwicklung bei der die Kollaboration in den Aktivitäten dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, dass mindestens ein Individuum räumlich von weiteren Individuen getrennt ist. Dabei kennzeichnen folgende beliebig miteinander kombinierbare Charakteristika die Produktentwicklung als standortverteilt:
- Die räumliche Trennung kann auf organisatorische und zeitliche Trennung ausgeweitet sein.
- Zur Kollaboration müssen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) verwendet werden.
- Die Kollaboration kann sowohl synchron als auch asynchron stattfinden.

Distributed product development describes the form of product development in which collaboration in the activities is characterized by at least one individual being spatially separated from other individuals. Thereby, the following characteristics, arbitrarily combinable, indicate the product development as distributed:
- The geographical separation can be extended to organizational and temporal separation.
- Information and communication technologies (ICT) have to be used for collaboration.
- Collaboration can take place both synchronously and asynchronously.
