Bei der Topologieoptimierung wird das Hinzufügen von Löchern innerhalb der Komponenten zugelassen, was bei der Form-/Gestaltoptimierung (auch Shapeoptimierung genannt) und der Dimensionierung nicht möglich ist. Auch ist die Änderung der Berandung zulässig. Diese Art der Optimierung ist zwar komplexer, allerdings hierdurch nicht aufwändiger bei der Berechnung als die Formoptimierung, weil die wirkliche Kontur durch eine Dichteverteilung approximiert wird. Die Topologieoptimierung wird im Produktentwicklungsprozess eingesetzt, um Vorschläge für Gestaltentwurf von Bauteilen zu erhalten.

Topology optimization allows the creation of holes within the structure, which is not possible with shape optimization and dimensioning. Changing the boundaries is also allowed. Although this type of optimization is more complex, it does not cause more calculation effort than shape optimization, because the real contour is approximated by a density distribution. Topology optimization is used in the product development process to obtain suggestions for the design of components.
