Eine Variante ist eine Produktgeneration, die innerhalb des Produktgenerationszyklus ihres Varianten-Referenzprodukts initiiert ist, weitest gehend parallel zu diesem Zyklus existiert und einen hohen ÜV-Anteil zu ihrem Varianten-Referenzprodukt aufweist. Sie wird als Variante ihres Varianten-Referenzprodukts bezeichnet. Die Variante ist zu ihrem Varianten-Referenzprodukt durch eine differente Ausprägung der charakterisierenden Merkmale abgegrenzt, um individuellen Kunden- und Marktanforderungen gerecht zu werden.
Im Gegensatz zu den Produktgenerationen die Varianten sind, haben die anderen Produktgenerationen (insb. auch die Varianten-Referenzprodukte) vorwiegend das Ziel einen existierenden Produktgruppengenerationszyklus am Markt abzulösen und damit einen neuen Zyklus aufzuspannen.

A variant is a product generation which is initiated within the product generation cycle of its variant reference product, exists as far as possible parallel to this cycle and has a high CV percentage to its variant reference product. It is called a variant of its variant reference product. The variant is separated from its variant reference product by a different set of characterizing features to meet individual customer and market requirements.
In contrast to the product generations which are variants, the other product generations (in particular also the variant reference products) have predominantly the goal to replace an existing product group generation cycle at the market and to span a new cycle.
The product group generation cycle (colored boxes in the background) comprises the individual product generation cycles of a product generation and its variants. (time-to-market TTM + time-in-market TIM)
